What is Coke?
Coke is a traditional fuel used for blacksmithing. It burns longer than charcoal, doesn’t give off much smoke and burns really hot. Coke is what is left when coal has had all of the sulfur and assorted “volatiles” burned off so is much safer and nicer to work with. It is much lighter than it looks as it’s quite porous. Coke is relatively pure carbon and provides the high temperatures required to bring the steel and other metals to the incandescent temperatures necessary for forging and heat treatment. It is a fabuous heat source as it burns very hot and clean unlike raw coal which is very sooty and smoky, leaving waste products stuck to the metal as contaminants. Some of these characteristics also make coke a preferred source of fuel for older coke burning Aga and coke fired boilers. Please note however, that the size of blacksmithing coke is smaller than that needed for some Aga stoves. We do not carry the larger coke needed for some stoves.
