From Folly to Garden Nook

Classic style garden arch adapted with wrought iron and tabs to attach a trellis.

A recent testimonial from a customer describing her project as a folly, is in fact a beautiful, practical garden arch which, once established, will make her garden the place she always dreamed of. In architecture, a folly is an ornamental or decorative building or structure that doesn’t serve much of a practical purpose, even if it’s meant to look like it does. It’s creation often reflects a whimsical inclination on the part of the garden designer, built primarily to be seen as part of the scenery. Often our customers have a wonderful vision of what they’d like to create with limited resources – their “whimsical inclination” or folly. That’s where custom making items to suit sits so well with these clients.

When selling your home, first impressions are pivotal in whether a prospective buyer will turn up at your open inspection, so it’s important to get their attention. You don’t get a second chance with first impressions. For this reason alone, a welcoming front entrance with a beautiful, high quality wrought iron gate can make a huge difference in how buyers view the overall quality of the property. The initial outlay in bettering the street appeal of your home, can add thousands to the asking price of your home as we all having buyers line up at your open inspection, wondering what other quality features the house has to offer.

Dog friendly gate

Pet safe wrought iron gate

Gates are not just for keeping people and animals out, but also for keeping our precious children and pets in. Usually for their own safety. Pet friendly gates don’t have to be boring and unattractive, but they should be safe. Most dog safe gates are usually plain, with vertical bars. However a simple embellishment may be more than enough to take a plain, boring gate up a notch to something quite elegant. This was our solution to one customer’s problem.

‘Eleanor’ Heritage Farm Gate in Yarramalong, NSW

Eleanor steel driveway farm gate made by Farmweld is hinged to large heavy posts. Post and rail fences look great with Farmweld's heritage country style gates

It was time to replace a old ‘bodgy’ fitting gate with something that would complement and grace the entrance to this lovely country property. Alternative access to an adjoining paddock was also needed, so a smaller, matching gate was the answer. Clients are quite often worried that gates won’t fit, especially when ordering from interstate. However so long as we know the distance between your posts, ie the gap, your gate will be made to fit perfectly. The customers were rapt with the outcome and this is what they had to say…

Daylesford Heritage Gate

Daylesford gate

Quite often we’re asked if we can replicate an old heritage gate that someone’s seen and fallen in love with. The usual scenario is that you’ve got an older property which has lost the original gates but you haven’t been able to buy an old gate from anywhere. You really need something ‘old’ to suit. The one gate we’ve been asked about the most is the one shown in the Vic Tourism ad for Daylesford and Hepburn Springs. This gate graces the driveway entrance to the historic Wombat Park Homestead with it’s magnificent gardens.

Case study: designing a wrought iron courtyard gate, Brisbane Qld

wrought iron courtyard gate with centre motifBuilding projects are always easier when you have competent people to help you out. A lovely couple from Brisbane were in the process of having a courtyard built at the back of their home. They needed a wrought iron gate to set off their French provincial style courtyard but needed some assistance with the design of a gate as there was still nothing there. The safety of two small terriers had to be taken into account as well.

Sheralee approached us about making a wrought iron aviary for her husband’s birthday – a surprise gift! She had to keep to a budget so we designed something which met the specifications of:

  • budget
  • aesthetics
  • functionality

This is what she she had to say about her experience of working with Farmweld:

Hand forged courtyard gate, Buderim Qld

Hand forged wrought iron courtyard gate

We spent ages searching in person and on the web for someone who could produce a quality wrought iron gate in a traditional style at a fair price. We weren’t interested in cheap and shoddy but by the same token we also weren’t prepared to pay for underwriting someone’s over-expensive website, either. I liked the look and feel of Farmweld’s website straight away, because you could tell these were people who were passionate about what they were doing and
